Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is saddened that in the early hours of this morning, an elephant died arising from a hit by a canter lorry at Kanga station area of the park along Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
The report coming from the highway police was received by KWS at about 4.00 a.m. upon which a team was dispatched to the scene. The elephant, an adult female had unfortunately already died from impact of the accident.
The three occupants in the lorry were reported to have sustained minor injuries while the lorry ferrying ‘miraa’ and headed for Mombasa had some damage. The lorry has since been removed from the scene and police are investigating the accident.
The carcass was removed from the road and the tusks were recovered by KWS for safe custody.
Our attention is drawn to the pictures and stories doing rounds on social media which are highly speculative as to the reason why the elephant was hit. KWS has launched investigations into the matter and would urge for patience and understanding.
We wish to appeal to the drivers on our roads near Protected Areas especially Mombasa road to be careful and be on the lookout for wildlife.
