FALSE TORTURE CLAIMS AGAINST KWS RANGERS

Release Date:
Monday, May 6, 2019 - 10:15

It has come to Kenya Wildlife Service attention that false information is being circulated on some media platforms about alleged torture and disappearance of community members living near parks by Kenya Wildlife Service rangers.

The latest such claim is a report attributed to the Standard Media Group, a post on Kenyans.co.ke and a facebook account named Mohamood E. Khamisa, and which relates to an allegation that was made in 2012 with the subsequent inquiry done by DCIO Kibwezi where the case was closed due to lack of evidence.

KWS officers operate as guided by the law and have not been involved in any torture or killings of community members as alleged.

Wherever our officers are involved in an operation involving the public or suspected poachers, it is usually reported not only to the police but also shared with the media with particulars provided as appropriate. Any suspects arrested are usually booked at the nearest Police Station for due process in a court of law.

Where complaints relating to any of our operations emerge we not only cooperate with the police but also with all relevant agencies to allow the law to take its course.
