FINAL STRETCH FOR BURNING OF ELEPHANT IVORY AND RHINO HORN

Preparations for the disposal-through burning, of elephant ivory, rhino horn and other seized illegal wildlife products entered home stretch on April 20, 2016 at an event led by KWS Director General Mr. Kitili Mbathi and  witnessed by media and representatives of nongovernmental Organisations.

TWO FINED SH. 63 MILLION FOR ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF IVORY

Two men have been fined a total of sixty-three million shillings for each being in illegal possession of three kilogrammes of ivory.

Wilson Kiyayooni appeared before Narok Senior Resident Magistrate Allan Sitati and was fined Sh.40 million or serve life imprisonment in default for illegally being in possession of an elephant tusk weighing three kilogrammes.

TWO CHINESE ARRESTED FOR TRAFFICKING ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TROPHIES

Two Chinese nationals were on April 4, 2016 arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport ( JKIA) for trafficking assorted illegal wildlife trophies.

The suspects, Yang Yu and Xu Miaohong were nabbed at the airport by KWS canine unit security personnel in collaboration with other security organs at the airport while on transit from Lagos by KQ 533 to Guangzou by KQ 870 via JKIA.

THREE CHINESE TO BE ARRAIGNED IN NAIROBI COURT OVER IVORY

Three Chinese male suspects will tomorrow morning be arraigned before the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi after they were arrested with assorted ivory products and lion teeth while on transit through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

They were booked at the JKIA Police Station.  They were intercepted last night at 10pm while travelling by Kenya Airways flight KQ 886.  

KWS OFFERS AMNESTY FOR SURRENDER OF ILLEGAL TROPHIES

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has offered a 21-day amnesty for the surrender of any wildlife trophies which are held without a Permit issued by the Service.

Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Natural Resources, and Regional Development Authorities Prof. Judi Wakhungu extended the amnesty when she briefed the media on the upcoming burn of elephant ivory and rhino horn set for April 30, 2016.

FOUR POLICE OFFICERS TO BE CHARGED WITH ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF IVORY

Four Administration Police officers are to be arraigned in Kibera Court in Nairobi this morning for illegal possession of 5kg ivory.

This follows their arrest at Nairobi West last evening (Monday, February 29, 2016) as they attempted to sell the ivory.   

The suspects, belonging to the ‘Security of Government Buildings’ Unit based at Uhuru Camp, Nairobi, included a government-owned vehicle, two corporals and two constables, namely:

UPDATE ON LIONS SIGHTED IN NGONG FOREST

Further to the press release this morning, Kenya Wildlife Service would like to confirm that there was no sighting or any signs of lions at the Ngong road forest as earlier reported.

KWS search and monitoring team undertook a thorough search of the area but there was no evidence of lion presence. It has also emerged that the traffic police officers who reported the matter to KWS were themselves conveying informtion received from a truck driver through other intermediaries.
