UPDATE ON FOUR LIONESSES FROM NNP

Kenya Wildlife Service capture and translocation teams have since early this morning been searching for four lionesses that were reported to have moved out of the Nairobi National Park onto langata road and the southern bypass through the Langata Barracks.

Kenya Wildlife Service has a new director general who reported on duty this morning.

Mr Kitili Mbathi, the immediate former CfC Stanbic Holdings chief executive, was appointed to the position following a competitive recruitment process. 

Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Prof Judi Wakhungu, and KWS Board of Trustees chairman, Dr Richard Leakey introduced him to KWS staff and journalists in Nairobi.

FRAUDULENT ANNOUNCEMENTS OF VACANCIES AT KWS

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) attention has been drawn to fraudulent messages circulating via WhatsApp and other social media platforms that vacancies exist at KWS for various positions.

 

KWS wishes to advise the general public that vacancy position advertisements follow the laid down KWS and Government regulations using mainstream media and do not use the whatsApp platform.

 

NEW LITTER BINS BOOST CONSERVATION IN NAIROBI PARK

Twenty four sets of baboon-proof bins have been donated by Roto Moulders Limited to Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). The new bins were designed following an inquiry made by KWS for a possible solution to secure litter bins within Nairobi National Park to make them impenetrable by baboons.

KWS CELEBRATES CONSERVATION HEROES’ DAY

On December 16, 1946, the first national park in Kenya, Nairobi National Park, was gazetted. Kenya Wildlife Service Board of Trustees and Management have since 2005 set aside the 16th of every December to commemorate and celebrate conservation heroes, both deceased and living.

UPDATE II ON LION POISONING IN THE MARA

A lion cub that had been under treatment after the Marsh pride poisoning incident has also died from severe injuries inflicted by a buffalo. Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Narok County Government officials efforts to treat it were unsuccessful.  This brings to three lions that have died as a result of the weekend poisoning incident.

UPDATE ON LION POISONING IN THE MARA

Two suspects were yesterday remanded in police custody for two weeks by a Narok court to facilitate investigations into the poisoning of two famous lionesses in the Mara. 

 

A third suspect has since been determined to be a key prosecution witness. 

 

A Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) veterinary doctor conducted a post mortem examination in the presence of scene of crime officers and sent samples to the Government Chemist in Nairobi for toxicological analysis.  

THREE SUSPECTS ARRESTED OVER POISONING OF TWO LIONS

Three suspects have been arrested over the poisoning of two lions in Narok and are expected to be arraigned in court.

The dead lions are feared to have consumed poisoned meat. 

One of the dead lions was identified while the other one had been mauled by hyenas beyond recognition. A cub that was accompanying them was fine by this afternoon. At the same time, there were three carcasses of vultures in the vicinity suspected to have preyed on  the lion carcasses.

HOMA BAY MEN EMERGE WINNERS AT 5TH EDITION OF THE LAKE VICTORIA SITATUNGA BOAT RACE

Homa Bay men boat paddlers emerged winners at the 5th edition of the Lake Victoria Sitatunga Boat Race at the Bumbe Beach, Busia County.

They took the trophy for keeps having won for the third time in a row and the accompanying Ksh100,000, sponsored by the Busia County government. They used a boat named ‘Maende’ in honour of Ms Mary Maende, the Kenya Wildlife Service Homa Bay County Warden.
