Wildlife Habitats
The main habitats represented by our parks are:
Forests
Forests comprise less than 2 per cent of Kenya’s land mass covering about 1.4 million hectares. A forested ecosystems park in Kenya is like the majestic Aberdares, Mt.Elgon, Mt.Kenya and Marsabit national Parks. The former three national parks also forms Part of the major water towers for this country
Wetlands
In Kenya, Wetlands and shallow water bodies are diverse and important natural resources which include areas of extreme ecological importance and conservation value both nationally and internationally. Wetlands form vital components of the hydro logical cycle and are essential as breeding, rearing and feeding habitats for many species of wildlife.
Wetlands of tourism importance are like Saiwa Swamp National park, Lakes Naivasha and Nakuru,
Savvanna
Vast grasslands cover 70 per cent of Kenyan land mass. 91 per cent of Kenya parks and reserves are found within the savannah ecosystem these include parks like the Amboseli, the two Tsavos, the Meru Park among others. Savannahs provide an unparalled opportunity for viewing wildlife.
Marine
Kenya’s Marine Ecosystem is rich, varied and world famous. Fantastic coral gardens, multi coloured fish and marine creatures are some of the fascinating marine park sights, full of interest and wonder. Visitors can enjoy sub aquatic viewing of marine life by riding on glass bottomed boats, dhow trips to watch dolphins and dugongs, scuba diving and snorkelling among others.
To protect the ecological integrity of the Kenyas Coral reefs the government of Kenya has designated several marine parks and reserves. These are Kisite, Kiunga, Malindi, Mombasa, Mpunguti and Watamu.
