It lives singly or in pairs, more rarely in small packs. It is not as noisy and aggressive as the spotted hyena. It is a scavenger feeding on carrion, and killing small stock in case of necessity. It usually remains hidden by day in dense bush. It wanders great distances, and drinks regularly.
