Translocation of a total of twenty one black rhinos to Loisaba conservancy in Laikipia County commenced today at Nairobi National park where the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Dr. Alfred Mutua flagged off the exercise.

Speaking before the start of the exercise, Dr. Mutua said Kenya is committed to growing her rhino population by applying best conservation practices. He expressed satisfaction that for the last three decades black rhino population has impressively increased and hit the 1,000 mark.

Dr. Mutua said his ministry will continue to provide resources to support rhino conservation. He commended the Board and management of KWS for prudent leadership that has ensured conservation of rhinos and other endangered wildlife species. The CS stated that Kenyans have a collective responsibility to conserve all wildlife species for future generations.

KWS Director General, Dr. Erustus Kanga thanked the management of Loisaba conservancy for accepting to take in 21 black rhinos, noting this was a good gesture as it will create more space for rhino breeding.  The Director General said KWS boasts of highly trained capture and translocation team that is revered in the region.

The translocation exercise will see three black rhinos, six black rhinos and twelve black rhinos translocated from Nairobi national park, Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Lewa Down respectively to Loisaba conservancy.
