Land use pressure, habitat loss, human elephant conflict (HEC), and illegal killing for both meat and ivory continue to pose threats to the long-term survival of elephant populations across Africa. Recent research also points to climate change and the increasing frequency of droughts as a major threat to elephant populations.

Jamaican sprinter and 100m world record holder Usain St Leo Bolt yesterday November 2, 2009 named a three-month Kenyan cheetah cub ‘Lightning Bolt’ at the Nairobi Animal Orphanage and adopted it.  

BREAKTHROUGH IN GOVERNMENT PUBLIC APPEAL ON SURRENDER OF MAU TITLE DEEDS KWS officials chat with some of the Mau Forest Complex occupants. The occupants are heeding calls from the Government to surrender title deeds of land situated in water catchment areas.

October 26, 2009 marked a major breakthrough in the government’s appeal to the public to surrender land title deeds in the Mau Forests Complex. 

Mr Nkotoi Deliga of Nakuru became the first occupant of the Mau to heed calls from the government to surrender title deed of land situated in water catchment areas.

Six suspected ivory dealers were on October  26, 2009  charged with illegal trade and possession of elephant tusks before a Voi court. The suspects were remanded until Wednesday  28, 2009 when they will appear again before Voi Resident Magistrate Linus Nyakundi for hearing.
